What’s in your household cleaning products?
Hopefully as little chemical or toxic substances as possible! Here are my thoughts.
We should be using household products that we don’t mind our children and our pets being in contact with daily. Yes, it can take a little more elbow grease at times, but it doesn’t smell as strongly and most importantly it won’t harm your health.
There are great natural cleaners made with elements that are sometimes edible or otherwise found in nature, and that is ideal. The perfumes are light, even odorless, or might gently fill your rooms with the smell of lovely essential oils such as calming lavender or invigorating lemon.
Most of the harsh chemicals are found in our bathroom and kitchen cleaners, but also check the floor, counter and glass cleaners. The fewer ingredients the better, especially the ones you can pronounce.
I invite you to take a look at the labels on your products and decide if you think they are right for your home. Compare with the labels of products in natural food stores and you’ll see the difference.
Try making your own with simple ingredients often found in any ordinary grocery store. You might already have some in your fridge, like baking soda or in your cupboards such as white vinegar. You’ll find many recipes on the Internet, this is a good place to start:
Here is a simple 3-ingredient recipe for glass cleaner
- 2 cups of distilled or filtered water
- 2 Tablespoons of white vinegar
- 10-15 drops of essential oil: eucalyptus, peppermint or lemon
In a clean spray bottle add the 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to 2 cups of water. The 3rd ingredient is optional, but helps cover the smell of the vinegar. I now use micro-fiber cloths, ideal for windows and other shiny surfaces.
Try it out and let me know how it works for you!
Cheers to your health!
